Meet Michiel
Fashion Hotel Amsterdam
My name is Michiel de Boer, I am 29 years old, and I am from Alkmaar. Currently, I work as the Assistant F&B Manager at the Fashion Hotel in Amsterdam. In my free time, I enjoy staying active with sports like tennis and padel. I also love cooking for friends, discovering new restaurants, traveling, and doing fun activities with my friends.
My adventure with WestCord started at the Art Hotel in Amsterdam, where I completed my internship. After my internship, I continued working there part-time. After graduation I continued working full-time in the service department. The atmosphere at the Art Hotel made it a great place to work.
I quickly had the opportunity to grow into the role of F&B Supervisor, a role I eventually held for seven years. During the COVID-19 period, I also worked in the kitchen, cooking for COVID-19 patients who were guests at the hotel. This gave me the opportunity to gain experience in a different environment that, I always found interesting.
After seven years at the Art Hotel, I felt it was time for a new challenge within F&B. The Fashion Hotel in Amsterdam offered me this opportunity with a larger banqueting and events department, a bigger restaurant, and more rooms. Here, I eventually grew into the role of Assistant F&B Manager.
In my current position, I often start my work day by going over the schedule for the next day so that I am well prepared. I am always early at work, sometimes for a coffee and sometimes to do some preparations. I also make the staff schedule and inform the team about the planning of the day. I also help my team when it is needed, I do administrative tasks, and take care of orders. Everyday is different and filled with a lot of different activities – too many to list them all!
What I enjoy most about my job is working together with the team and collaborating on different events and operational tasks to make them a success. The most important thing for me is that everyone enjoys what they do and that there is a good atmosphere in the workplace. I also find learning new things very important.
What areas would you like to develop further in the coming time?
I would like to further develop my skills in management and organization. My dream is to open my own restaurant.
What has been your highlight so far in your job at WestCord Hotels?
My highlight will be reached when, I become a General Manager at a WestCord Hotel, haha. I am also proud to have been working at WestCord Hotels for ten years already.
How would your colleagues describe you, or what three compliments would they give you?
They see me as a hard worker who is always there for others, and they think I am an all-rounder and someone who also is having fun with the team.
