Meet Jan

My name is Jan Vrieswijk, I’m 24 years old, and I come from Achlum. Currently, I work as a Kitchen Staff member at Strandpaviljoen ’t Badhuys on Vlieland. In my free time, I enjoy playing sports, gaming, and spending time with friends and family.

In search of a new challenge, I came across the Kitchen Staff vacancy on Indeed. Although I had no prior experience in the kitchen, I had always been curious about this work field. It seemed like a lot of fun to work in the kitchen, and since February 2024, I’ve found my place here.

At first, there was a lot to learn, as I had never worked in a kitchen before. However, I’ve now settled in well and I can (almost) independently manage the cold side of the kitchen.

Every workday starts with a cup of coffee, which I enjoy while chatting with my colleagues. After that, I dive into preparing for lunch and check the mise en place list. I ensure that all ingredients are sliced, baked, or cooked, so we are well-prepared for lunch and dinner. After lunch, I shift my focus to dinner and prepare the starters and desserts. Around 9 PM, we start cleaning the kitchen, and I usually clock out around 10:00 or 10:30 PM. Often, I take some time afterward to catch up with my colleagues, with a drink.

What I enjoy most about my job? The creative aspect of cooking and the social interaction with my colleagues! For me, the most important things are being able to work independently and maintaining a good atmosphere among my colleagues.

Where would you like to develop further in the future?

In the near future, I would like to further develop my skills in the kitchen, and I hope to grow. I aim to be able to manage other sections of the kitchen independently.

What has been your highlight so far in your job at WestCord Hotels?

At ’t Badhuys, we sometimes host large groups or weddings in the restaurant. These days are very challenging and hectic, but also incredibly fun as we prepare everything.

How would your colleagues describe you or what three compliments would they give you?

My colleagues would describe me as someone who is perfectionistic, cheerful, and always open for a chat.
