In conversation with Iris Tromp
On Terschelling, where nature takes the lead and the sea is visible everywhere, Iris Tromp is the front office manager at WestCord Hotel Schylge. With a career that started with an internship and a connection to island life, Iris shares her growth within the company and her passion for the hospitality industry.
Iris, can you tell us more about yourself and your journey within WestCord Hotels?
‘I’ve now been working at WestCord for almost eight years. My parents brought me to Terschelling as a baby, and my love for the island has only grown since then. After my studies, I started as an employee at Hotel Schylge. Then, I moved to Groningen when a new WestCord Hotel was being built there, and I had the opportunity to be part of the opening of The Market Hotel. When I was offered the position of Front Office Manager—back on Terschelling—I hesitated at first. But once I was on the boat, sitting in the sun on my way to visit friends, I thought, why not? Terschelling is a beautiful island!’
Balance
What did you study and how did you combine it with your work?
‘I studied Front Office Management and Aviation Services. Although I lived in the Randstad for a while for another internship at Schiphol, Terschelling pulled me back with its peace and space.’
Unique Location
What makes WestCord Hotel Schylge so special?
‘The hotel is beautifully located by the marina in West-Terschelling. Many guests have a connection to the island, and when you enjoy Terschelling so much yourself, it’s easy to pass on that passion.’
How does your role contribute to the guest experience?
‘It’s about the little things, like having a chat and offering recognition. I love giving tips about what to see and do on the island. That personal contact creates a bond and makes guests want to return.’
Terschelling as a Surf Paradise
You enjoy surfing in your free time. Is Terschelling a good place to surf?
‘When the surf conditions are good, depending on the weather and wind, you can surf wonderfully on the island. The gently sloping beach makes it fun to learn here on Terschelling. With 30 kilometers of beach, there’s plenty of space for everyone. I’ve always loved swimming in open water since I was a child. When I was younger, I didn’t stop at my ABC swimming diploma; I now have over ten. My first surf lesson was about a year and a half ago at Surfvillage. The calm it gives to float in the sea with the beautiful view of the wide beach and dunes made me excited to do it more. A curious seal often pops its head above water, which makes it extra fun!’
Local Products and Nature
How does the hotel incorporate Terschelling's nature and products into the guest experience?
‘We love to advise guests about local products and activities. From cranberries to oysters or samphire, you can harvest a lot from nature here.’
The Ultimate Island Experience
Why should everyone visit WestCord Hotel Schylge?
‘Our location is unique, and we offer a homely feeling with many activities, both inside and outside the hotel. It’s the ultimate island experience.’
New Adventure
You’re heading to Bonaire soon. What will you be doing there?
‘I’ll be working at a beach bar and hope to pick up windsurfing. It’s exciting, but I’m looking forward to living my dream.’
